What is it?

3D Secure (Three Domain Secure) is an international security protocol developed by the major card brands (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, among others). Its purpose is to verify the identity of the cardholder when making an online payment, adding an additional layer of protection against fraud and chargebacks.
How does it work?
When a customer makes a purchase with their card on a site that has 3D Secure enabled, the system requests an additional verification —such as a temporary password (OTP), a code sent via SMS, or biometric authentication— to confirm that the cardholder is making the transaction.
Only after completing this step is the payment authorized and processed.
Main benefits:
Increased security for your customers and your business.
Decreases the risk of fraud and chargebacks.
Enhances buyer confidence in your platform.
Complies with international authentication standards (PSD2, PCI DSS).
Costs
The service has no additional cost and is activated by default for transactions made through Ecart Pay, as long as the issuing bank of the card is compatible with the 3D Secure protocol.
What is it for?
3D Secure protects both the merchant and the customer by verifying the legitimacy of transactions before they are authorized. This reduces claims and prevents economic losses from unrecognized operations.
🔒 Note: In Ecart Pay, 3D Secure is automatically applied to eligible transactions to ensure a safer and more reliable payment environment, with no need for manual configuration. |
